The best tours are a whole day out, but a half-day can cover a good area too.

We also offer a shorter 2 to 2-1/2 hour trip, but be aware - the time flies by!

Every tour is exclusive for you. We can take up to 6 people.

1. Picturesque Hinterland

Discover deep valleys near Aberystwyth on the edge of the Cambrian Mountains.

Steep backroads and rough tracks lead to breath-taking views.

Follow in the footsteps of artists, poets and writers who came to marvel at the rugged landscape when mid Wales was at the heart of the ‘Picturesque movement’ in the 18th Century.

A forgotten country estate -inspiration for "The secret Garden". Remote lakes, isolated farmsteads, Red Kites overhead, hanging oak woodland with Redstarts and Pied flycatchers, forestry and open moorland.

2. Elan Valley Reservoirs

The 'Lake District' in the Cambrian Mountains. 

In The Elan and Claerwen valleys, 5 large reservoirs were built in the 1890's - 1900's and 1940's to supply water to the Midlands of England.

Ingenious Victorian engineering set in dramatic Welsh landscapes. Wooded valley sides, high open moorland, the reservoirs form the 'Lake District' of mid Wales. 

Start in Devils Bridge or Rhayader for a half day or from your accommodation for a full day. 

For a full day trip, this tour can easily be combined with Tour 1  and / or 3.

3. Mountain Roads

Drover's roads over the Cambrian Mountains, a remote reservoir and a Gold Mine. 

A single track former drovers route runs between the lush grazing lands of the Teifi valley in the west and the Wye valley on route to Hereford to the East.

Climbing high across open moorland, plunging into the deep valleys feeding the long fingers of the Llyn Brianne reservoir and passing  through forest.

The tour can circle to the south with stunning views of the Brecon Beacons and visit the Dolaucothi Gold Mine or continue on to visit the Elan Valley. Can be combined with 1 and 2, or include an especially remote mountain track.

4. Wilderness adventure.

Reaching parts others dont! Unsurfaced Roads

Following a selection of rough tracks and ancient routes in the wilderness of the Ceredigion Uplands, (comparable to the Scottish Highlands). Passing several small lakes, a large reservoir and ruined farms with astonishing views to the south and west.

Tours start in Devils Bridge, Aberystwyth or from your accommodation if in the area.

5. Train and tour.

Catch the Vale of Rheidol steam train from Aberystwyth and join a Cambrian Safaris Tour at Devils Bridge.

The train leaves Aberystwyth at 10.30 and takes an hour to climb the steep side of the valley. 

We will meet you at the other end, take a look at the 'Devil's Bridge' and then continue on a tour of the surrounding area, finishing at your car or your accommodation. 

Train tickets are an additional

cost. Please ask if you would like them included.

6. Bomber Lane.

Southern Snowdonia

Southern Snowdonia's dramatic ruggedness contrasts greatly with the varied landscapes which our usual tours explore. A Welsh Prince's castle, Mary Jones' cottage, Tal-y-Llyn lake and Railway, The dramatic Craig yr Aderyn ('bird rock') where Cormorants and Choughs nest and up 'Bomber lane, climbing high above the Dyssinni Valley and over the western flank of Cadair Idris with views over the Mawddach estuary and Barmouth. Passing the B17 bomber crash site and on to the Cregennen lakes.

7. Cardiganshire's Silver-Lead Mines.

Over 100 old Silver-Lead mines in north Ceredigion employed as many as 5,000 miners and their families in the 1860s.​ The mining ended long ago but the spoil heaps and ruined  buildings are still significant features on the landscape.

Combine a Visit to the Silver Mountain Experience with a tour of the surrounding area. see below

On most of our tours we talk about the mining heritage of the area and try to shed a different light upon the remains. Tours can feature a selection of mine sites, miners cottages, chapels and the small lakes created to supply the mines with water to power their pumps and machinery.

8. Evening Tours Sunsets and Stars

Join us for a 3 hour trip in the evening. 

Enjoy a long summer evening in the hills, or a spring or autumn sunset and some star - gazing. The Cambrian Mountains are recognised as havig the best dark skies in the UK south of Scotland.

After an early dinner, or before a late meal, start and finish time is flexible. We can't promise the weather will cooperate so we will discuss options with you the evening before or during the day. Prices as half day tour. Including the option of a train ride on the Vale of Rheidol. (When available)

9. Just For You.

We love to show you around a beautiful but little known part of Great Britain. No one tour is the same as another, but we can certainly arrange a bespoke tour for you, from any start point within reasonable reach of Aberystwyth. 

Let us know where you are staying - if you haven't decided yet we can help with that, and we can work out a day out to suit your interests.

Its possible to mix elements from most of the above tours. 

We can now add some unique heritage visits to real local action specially arranged for you.

  • The Silver Mountain Experience visit – includes a choice of guided tour. Choose from either; A Miner’s Life, which immerses you in the original and rare setting of our 250+ year old mine, or The Black Chasm where you can discover the dark and murky history of Mid Wales.

  • Spend time exploring the mine buildings and surface miners trail. 

  • Lunch at the Silver Mountain Experience café – our cosy café offers a lunch menu serving a variety of tasty treats. Included in this package is a meal, drink and sweet or savoury snack of your choice.

  • 2 1/2  hour tour or half day tour with Cambrian Safaris. (Based on tours 1 and 7 above).
