HiberNOT! (#Hibernot)

Updated: Mar 29, 2020

Do you hibernate? No - neither do we! Many tourism businesses stay open, or open part time during the winter. In our local area near Aberystwyth here are a few things you can see, do or visit all winter.

Join a Cambrian Safaris tour - we offer tours 363 days a year! In the winter we are completely flexible with start and finish times, and fairly flexible with prices. All tours are exclusive / bespoke - arranged especially for you!

The Vale of Rheidol Railway starts running trains from the 15th February - their shop at their station in Aberystwyth is also open. Two Hoots, The cafe in the station in Devils Bridge also opens from the 15th Feb.

The Silver Mountain Experience is open all year round these days, (closed Mondays) with a choice of tours trails, museum and activities... and a cafe!

Devils Bridge Waterfalls will be 'manned' daily through the February half term week, from the 15th Feb, and at weekends thereafter, we are there ourselves sometimes! Otherwise they can be accessed through the turnstiles in daylight hours, to see the 'Punchbowl' and the Bridges (10 -15 minutes), or for the full Waterfalls walk, which takes 45 minutes to an hour with quite a few steps and rough paths, a long descent to the bottom of the falls and climb back up beside the waterfalls.

There are many other places to walk in the area, including way-marked trails in forestry areas, and lots of information is available to help you find a route suitable for you. Bwlch Nant Yr Arian visitor centre is open and a good place to start. They feed the Red Kites across the lake at 2pm GMT. / 3pm BST.

Strata Florida Abbey is open with free admission until 31st March.

If you explore the area yourself, you will find information panels in every village with insights into the local history of the area - take some time to read some of these - it really colours things in!

Food for your lunch is also available at a variety of locations, Y Talbot hotel in Tregaron has a fabulous menu, as does the Hafod hotel. The Y Ffarmers in Llanfihangel y Creuddyn has a new lunch menu in addition to their main dinner menu. On the A487 north east of Aberystwyth there's great food at the Pennau Craft & Coffee Shop in Bow Street and Cletwr is a community run cafe on the at Tre'r-ddol close to the turn off for Borth. Cwtch is a small cafe in Pontrhydygroes, beside our local garage - there's a wonderful forest walk from here as well!

Where to stay? Most of the accommodation in the area is open all year around, with a wide choice of Hotels, Guest houses, Holiday cottages, even Glamping pods!

So shake a leg and enjoy some winter explorations in Mid wales!
